A Gift for Valentines

Love is in the air. Everywhere you look are splashes of pink and red as the shops gear up for Valentines, the day when love is celebrated in its most indulgent form.

We feel lucky to be able to say that love is all around us in our everyday. As a family we say 'I love you', leave cute notes lying around the house to be found and pick up heart shape stones on the beach for the sentiment.

Em:

Lou asked me what my favourite Valentines moments were . . . through my 21 years of marriage, the most beautiful and memorable have been non-materialistic. A cheeky burlesque dance (Lou just threw up in her mouth!), poetry, I even wrote a song and performed to Bruno Mars 'Count on Me'.

Whilst spa and hotel breaks, restaurants, jewellery, scents, bouquets and pink champagne are all lavishly beautiful gifts that you wouldn't say no to and be so grateful for, dare we say . . . they may be a bit cliche?

With that in mind, we have put together some ideas we thought could help you make this Valentines and every other just perfect.

  • Breakfast in bed - Never underestimate this simple gesture, breakfast in bed really sets you up for a good day. We recommend pancakes!

  • Make it personal - A love letter, a serenade or impromptu dance . . . make it a night to remember.

  • Say it in the sand - Or on the grass, or even write it on a bedsheet and hang it somewhere to be seen.

  • Create a playlist - Music can be a powerful thing. It can move you to tears and set your pulse racing; emotions that return when you hear just one bar. Fill it with all of 'your' songs. Those special tunes that conjure memories of perfect moments.

  • Vouchers - These are fun . . . and valuable. Get creative with your offers.

  • Make a promise stone - Paint your message on a stone and place it somewhere special, or throw it in the sea or hide it for eternity.

  • Lock it up - Keep it simple or get it engraved. Lock up your love somewhere special, but don't throw away the key.

  • Frame a quote - Be it poetry, film, script or something of your own creation. This is an easy but very thoughtful gift.

  • Find the perfect spot - Somewhere that can be your forever place. Get cosy, set the scene and watch the sun go down.

  • Make a meal of it - We do this every year. Print out a menu. Three courses, dress the table, light the candles and feel the love.

  • Go independent - If you decide to buy a gift, try an independent retailer . . . Etsy is one of our favourites as you can always find something unique.

  • Get creative - Make something together. You don't have to be an artist for this to be the perfect Valentine. A card with a handwritten verse, homemade truffles, a clay trinket dish or cut out paper hearts to hang from the ceiling. So many options, all you need is imagination.

Be it for yourself, someone you like, like a lot or love, make Valentines a little different this year.

Make an outstanding moment from a tiny thing. Create a memory that didn't come at a cost, a moment of true romance and heartfelt love, a grand gesture on a tiny scale, a non-materialistic Valentines that will last a lifetime in the heart!

All our love xx
